    THE PETITION

    Whereas: We spend over $2 trillion for healthcare in the US, yet 50 million are still not covered and another 50 million are being denied care by their insurance companies;

    Whereas: Whereas the healthcare coverage in the United States is ranked #37 in the world by the World Health Organization and yet we spend almost twice as much as any other country, enough to cover everybody with excellent comprehensive healthcare;

    Whereas: A bill has been proposed in Congress, HR-676, non-profit Medicare for All, that outlines a national health care program that will provide guaranteed choice, quality affordable health care and prescription drugs to everyone in the country;

    Whereas: Over 15,000 doctors have signed on in favor of this plan, including two former U.S. Surgeons General;

    Whereas: Under this proposed plan, we can pay for a comprehensive national health care program with the same money we are now spending by removing insurance companies -- and cover every single person in the United States;

    And Whereas: The bill provides money for retraining and giving priority to those whose jobs as administrators in the insurance industry would be lost as a result of this shift;

    Be it Resolved That: We call on our members of Congress to pass HR 676, non-profit Medicare for All, so our people and our nation can have the excellent health care system we deserve. Health care is a human right, and we call on our members of Congress to recognize that right.

    (FOR YOUR RECORDS: My name is a part of my email address. The name that needs to be listed on the petition is that of our union, listed as the first and last name. Our comments follow. Thanks, Sheila Wade) With millions of Americans either uninsured, or under insured the need for an overhaul of our nation's health care system is LONG overdue! Our Congressional Representatives have excellent health care insurance paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Is it too much to ask that we, their constituencies, receive (at the very least) the same level of health care coverage?

    I feel this is a very important issue, my girlfriend(who works full time) and many others I know cannot get health insurance. If she or anyone without insurance is hurt then they will not be able to pay for it. It is a basic human right, and should not be denied to anyone. Health care should be for everyone not for a small protion of the population.

    If we can afford to waste money on frivolous wars in foreign lands, and if we can underwrite the rebuilding of a nation we have destroyed providing their health care, and if we can provide cadillac benefits to our representatives in Congress, then I say we have more than enough funds to provide single payer health care benefits to ALL our citizens. The U.S. could save 286 billion dollars from all the paper work and bureacracy that the present fragmented and fractured system is costing this nation. We are suppose to be the richest country for our people.But we have worse health care than Europe or Germany.We have children who can be refused care for lack of health insurance or not good enough insurance,We have eldery who can not afford there medicines,And we have working men and women who can not get care unless they have cash in hand,And for a lot of families they can not come up with 5,000 in time to do any good.So if are Goverment can't set caps on insurance maybe it is time to let the Goverment set up a health care system that leaves no one untreated or without medicine.

    Safety and health care is the base of a more civilized and just society. Do people have to purchase firefighter insurance to have a house fire put out and lives saved, or otherwise pay out of pocket? Do people have to purchase police insurance for them to intervene in troublesome or dangerous situations, or otherwise pay out of pocket? We pay taxes towards road and bridge maintenance, we don’t have to buy road & bridge maintenance insurance or otherwise pay out of pocket to gain access. Do we have to pay sanitation insurance to have our garbage removed or otherwise pay out of pocket? It would not be workable and no one would go for it, but in some bizarre way this is the present situation in America with health care. Single-payer national health insurance is democratic, not managed health care in the U.S. Everything stems from health care. Studies have shown with single-payer national health insurance, there would be for various reasons less waiting time (if any, for elective surgery) in the U.S. than in Canada. Even if sometimes there was some waiting time for elective surgery, it is by far a win-win tradeoff for national health insurance. With national health insurance, health care has nothing to do with employment and all Americans have access to the health care system regardless of the size company they might work for, because it should have nothing to do with a company in the first place. You're covered whether you're a student, a part time working single mother, in between jobs...With national health insurance its benefits by far eclipse any perceived or exaggerated fear about wait time. Americans need to be relieved of this great worry and stress of health care once and for all. This would be truer democracy and freedom. The attitude in Canada is “We give a little to get a lot”. About 95% of Canadians are happy with their system and would never give it up. A bicycle mechanic I was speaking with in Toronto a few years ago said he would never be able to afford our mess of a health care system. Why should a worker at Taco Bell have to pay $40.00 a week into a health insurance plan for scant coverage and all kinds of co-payments and deductibles, when someone else at some other company gets great coverage? Why should health care have anything to do with employment in the first place? Why should a waitress with no health insurance have her scalp stitched back over her brain until they figure out who’s going to pay for her surgery from an auto accident? She had to wear a hockey helmet for almost four months until the standoff with Medicaid could be cleared up. Her skull piece was kept in the hospital freezer while she had to live with tremendous pain. Her brain would shift to one side over night. This goes way beyond rationing, this is barbaric!! Why should anyone have to be denied health care insurance or pay more because of pre-existing conditions? What a moral perversion this is. But it keeps the profit margin high for the health insurance companies and its shareholders. Is this any way for supposedly concerned representatives to protect the safety and health care of its citizens? Representatives without a health care finance worry in the world.... No one has the right to judge anyone for not having health care insurance. People are being priced right out of the market and cross their fingers and hope nothing happens. What a bunch of cruel, inhumane, and sadistic elected officials we have in office. These officials without a health care finance worry in the world.... This corrupt bunch of country club politicians opposed to single-payer national health insurance. Our elected officials are obligated to do some spiritual introspection, break ranks with their buddies in the health insurance industry and enact single-payer national health insurance. We are actually very close to it with House Bill HR 676. It is the basic framework on which to build by expanding Medicare to everyone. They are obligated to terminate this criminal and corrupt health care system in the U.S. or we the people will do so!! Thereafter, national health insurance will be phased in. Americans aren’t going to take this barbaric and sadistic treatment any longer. Millions of people will flood Washington from every corner of the country. This is a human rights and civil rights violation!! On this basis as well as the practicality of national health insurance, we will win this struggle and gain truer democracy and freedom that we deserve. We will make history together by making it a fairer and more humane country for our future generations. She said it well, that wise women at Taco Bell, “We have the numbers” Yes indeed and we will prevail in victory!!

    I have always believed in a National Health Care system intellectually. After breaking my leg seriously in Scotland in March, 2003 and being cared for by the National Health Service of Lothian in Edinburgh, I am committed viscerally. I had fantastic care during my 12 day hospital stay. And hospitalization, surgery and treatment that would have cost $30,000 or more in the U.S. was given to me, a US citizen and tourist at no charge. I truly believe that being free of financial worry and stress at times of serious illness and injury helps promote healing. I am eager to pay taxes for a National Health System so that residents of the U.S. and foreign visitors can have the kind of care I received in Scotland and not have to go into long-term debt or bankruptcy to pay for it. It is time that we joined the rest of the developed world and many in the developing nations who provide for the health and well being of their people.

    If less countries have universal health care why can't the greatess country in the world have it. As a country, we need to learne how to take care of our own people before we start taking care of folk in other countries.

    In a country as great as the United States of America, our leaders have failed us citizens. We can lose everything we worked our whole lives for, because of an illness. It's time to come to the aid of this country and do something FOR the citizens. HELP! PLEASE! Support and Pass this legislation. HR 676

    The current system makes no sense. We have been waiting at least 30 years for universal care. How many more years do we have to wait?

    I think this is urgent. I've lived under a single payer program in England and know its value.
