    THE PETITION

    Whereas: We spend over $2 trillion for healthcare in the US, yet 50 million are still not covered and another 50 million are being denied care by their insurance companies;

    Whereas: Whereas the healthcare coverage in the United States is ranked #37 in the world by the World Health Organization and yet we spend almost twice as much as any other country, enough to cover everybody with excellent comprehensive healthcare;

    Whereas: A bill has been proposed in Congress, HR-676, non-profit Medicare for All, that outlines a national health care program that will provide guaranteed choice, quality affordable health care and prescription drugs to everyone in the country;

    Whereas: Over 15,000 doctors have signed on in favor of this plan, including two former U.S. Surgeons General;

    Whereas: Under this proposed plan, we can pay for a comprehensive national health care program with the same money we are now spending by removing insurance companies -- and cover every single person in the United States;

    And Whereas: The bill provides money for retraining and giving priority to those whose jobs as administrators in the insurance industry would be lost as a result of this shift;

    Be it Resolved That: We call on our members of Congress to pass HR 676, non-profit Medicare for All, so our people and our nation can have the excellent health care system we deserve. Health care is a human right, and we call on our members of Congress to recognize that right.

    I was diagnosed with prostate cancer over a year ago.Fortuneately, I have employer-provided health insurance. If I did not, it probably would not have been detected in time and certainly I could not have afforded the treatments. This should not be the privelege of a few, but a right for all.

    The crisis in health care in our country is the leading domestic problem. National health insurance which covers everyone from birth to death. I agree with all said in the petition except I'm not convinced that healthcare is a right. Furthermore I think that even if I agreed with that claim I would think very hard about the negative conotation and consequences, from a marketing standpoint, of pushing for recognition of such a right. As a healthcare professional and a private citizen who has experienced the nightmare of having to choose between being uninsured or spending an exorbitant amount of $ on a private policy, I am disgusted by this country's lack of National Healthcare for all. I am especially disillusioned by the fact that there is short term interim medical insurance available for most states, which are effective the day one enrolls, but New York is exempt from those types of policies. It is time that ALL citizens in ALL states receive equal coverage and equal medical treatment, regardless of socio-economic status.

    Whether your 92 or 2, everyone should have the right to be healthy. If we, The United States Citizens, can afford to buy a good health care plan for our Congress, Senate, and our President for the rest of their lives. If we, The United States Citizens, can afford to buy healthcare for the citizens of Iraq. Why can't our Congress, Senators, and President let us, The United States Citizens, spend our money, and buy ourselves a healthcare plan equal to what we buy them, without having a third party (The Insurance Company CEO's) in there ripping us off?

    I am geeting close to an early retirement age that I have been working and saving for all my life. Now it looks as if I can't do it because of the skyrocketing costs of health insurance. I would have to pay approximately $7K per year for health insurance alone, and that is today. What happens 10 or 20 years from now? We must have a national health insurance plan that allows all americans affordable healthcare. Another aspect to this debate I haven't seen much coverage on is when you are self insured and you get sick, the insurance company cancels you. Then try to get insurance. As a physician in Michigan I see many patients with no health care and it saddens me. Many people who cannot afford health care will delay going to any health care provider if injured or shorten treatment plans due to the lack of funds. Many insurance companies have raised premiums out of reach here and even medicaid and medicare has decreased coverage due to lack of funding. We need to rally together to get every citizen health care. By doing this we can help eliminate discrimination in health care and this can lead to eliminating other forms of discrimination.

    I make $35,000 a year, am self employed, and my wife, who has a brain injury is, amazingly enough, not eligible for free health care from the state. So I pay $508 a month for health insurance which doesn't cover prescription drug costs. She works at Seattle's Best Coffee six hours a week, walks dogs for two people, and begs for more hours from the coffee shop on a monthly basis. I've considered offering a $5000 reward to the manager to be patient and train her so she can the extra hours and get the health care benefits, as I'm paying $6000 a year now for health insurance, and will probably be paying $8000 next year if it goes up 35% like it has the past few years.

    Working in a big-city medical center for the last 20 years, I could tell you stories of such terrible waste of resources CAUSED by insurance requirements, such as patients who arrive for a procedure with a small mistake on a referral form.
